Your Wardrobe Is Part of Your Leadership

Before you speak in a boardroom, the room has already formed an opinion. Most of it comes from how you show up.

That is not vanity. It is information people use to decide how much weight to give you, and it is entirely within your control.

The first read happens fast

People take in posture, fit, and finish within seconds. A suit that fits through the shoulders and sits cleanly at the collar says you pay attention. A jacket that pulls or a sleeve that runs long says the opposite, even if no one mentions it.

Consistency builds trust

Senior leaders are judged on judgment. When your presentation is steady from one meeting to the next, it reinforces the sense that you are steady too. Clients, boards, and teams notice when how you look matches how you lead.

Fit matters more than labels

A well-cut garment in a quiet cloth will always outperform an expensive one that does not fit. The goal is not to be noticed for your clothes. It is to be noticed, and to have your clothes support that rather than distract from it.

Where to start

Look at what you wear to your most important rooms: the board meeting, the client presentation, the evening event. Ask whether each piece fits as well as it should and says what you want it to say. If you are not sure, that is exactly the conversation I have with clients every week.
